Leyla is a super sweet mare that came to stay starved and 11-months pregnant. She had successful delivery two weeks after arriving at the farm, giving birth to a beautiful little chestnut baby girl we named April. April lived for 64 hours. The malnutrition had just been going on too long and even with feeding tubes, IV fluids and round the clock care she just couldn’t make it.
Leyla had a hard time adjusting to the loss of her foal but after a few days she began to stop circling and calling for April as her minimal production of milk also began to dry up. Without the concern of the pregnancy we could move forward with things that we knew would help her overall recovery, like worming and vaccinations. Her hooves were extremely long and she has one hoof that is called a contracted hoof. Essentially, that hoof is smaller then all the others, probably due to an injury early in life, forcing the hoof growth to cover the part of the hoof that provides cushion, the frog. She lost her winter coat and quickly began to put on weight and push her way into all the volunteers’ hearts. She loves attention and will whatever it takes to get it.
Leyla is a beautiful mare who would be a great pasture buddy and friend. She wants to spend time with people, loves to be groomed and messed with. She could help children and adults learn the proper and safe way to be with horses simply because of her love of people. But she will always be lame and should not be ridden.
